Dye transfer

Medium: Dye Transfer

Process Description – (50-75 words):
Is a process to make colored pictures using black and white film. The process was done using a stationary camera and using black and white negatives and three different colored filters- red, green and blue. These negatives were exposed on sheets of Matrix film composed of a gelatin coating over an estar base. Each was then soaked in its filter color and the heavier coating absorbed the color, after this process each was lined up over a sheet of special paper, each was carefully rolled onto the surface creating a rich and deeply colored print.

Artist's Biography –
David Goldblatt was born in Randfontein in 1930. His parents came to South Africa to escape the persecution of Lithuanian Jews in 1890. Due to religious persecution and alienation, David began photographing and documenting South African society. He ended up doing it for over 50 years.

Personal Reaction –
David Goldblatt's photos seem to have a lot of emptiness and emotion at the same time and in a way relates to his personal viewpoint of what society is like in South Africa. It is nice also how he has his subjects looking right at the camera in some of the shots because it makes them personable.

Visual Literacy

Medium: Visual literacy
Year:

Movement/Vocabulary Description – (50-75 words):
The visual literacy movement began when teachers and educators noticed a change in students after television arrived.  The IQ scored of young children rose greatly yet the number of students having trouble learning to read and write were decreasing.  The meaning of visual literacy is the ability to understand and express your-self in terms of visual material and to relate to visual meaning beyond the images themselves.

Personal Reaction – (50 – 75 words):
It is very sad how much television can affect people. Especially for young children.  This relates to photography because we have to see images and be able to comprehend them with meaning.  Or if there is a message in our photography we want others to be able to comprehend that message.

Personal Reaction – (50 – 75 words):
I think pretty much any chemical process is cool. It is interesting to think how chemicals go together to create something. Other than that I really don't understand much about it. I am more of a visual learner and would be interested to see this process being done. I am always willing to learn more.

Title: Conceptual Water towers
Artist: Bernd and Hilla Becher

Artist's Biography –
Bernd and Hilla were a German couple that were best known for their photography of industrial buildings. Together, the Bechers went out with a large formant camera and photographed these buildings from a number of different angles, but always with a straightforward "objective" point of view. The images of structures with similar functions were then displayed side by side to invite viewers to compare their forms and designs. These structures included barns, water towers, storage silos, and warehouses.

Personal Reaction –
It's a very interesting way of doing photography and is kind of cool to look at all these different pictures right next to each other.  With them all being in black and white it makes it seem more dramatic but eerie at the same time since there are never any people in their photographs.

C-41 Process

Process Description – (50-75 words):
This is a color print film developing process. The negatives can fade or color shift over time, mostly with older films newer films are archival. Each layer of film is only sensitive to certain colors. If the temperatures of your chemicals are off the result is color shifts in your film. All the developing for different companies is mostly the same.

Personal Reaction – (50 – 75 words):
This process I find interesting in that it changes the colors slightly from the original. On the car photo is has a very interesting how the chrome on the tires and the metal on the car light and how the colors mix. Also I think when you use this process you have to be very careful about what you shoot because it could end up being a complete waste if it doesn't have the effect you want.
