Anna Akins

Title: Poppy

Artist: Anna Atkins (1799-1871)

Medium: Photography

Year: 1852

Artist's Biography – Anna Atkins's talents in photography originated because of her love as a botanist. She used cyanotype photograms to display the specimens she was working with. She is most know for her work in developing the book, "British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions," which contained many different images of the plants that she was studying. She found it easier to use photography to display her images than any other methods.

Personal Reaction – I personally love the work of Anna Atkins. All of the images are so simple, but yet so beautiful. Her work consists primarily of cyanotype photograms, but her intentions were not to make great works of art in photography; instead she used photography as a means of scientific research. I think that it is amazing that her work as a botanist lead to such great images, and especially for the time period in which it was created.

Bea Nettles specializes in photographic techniques and book arts. She has been exhibiting and publishing since 1970. Bea taught photography at several different schools from 1970 to 2007, and has had over fifty exhibitions. She is known for experimenting with alternative processes.

I don’t really appreciate Nettles' works very much. Her style is very unique, just not especially appealing to me. It is interesting to see her differnt styles though.

Cara Mannino

Autochomes

Title: Child and Nurse

Artist: Zoller, Charles C.

Medium: Color Palate, Screen (Autochrome) Process

Year: 1907-1932

Process Description:

Some 19th century photographers experimented with chemical formulations trying to produce color images by direct exposure. Others applied paint and powders to the surface of monochrome prints. Different experimentations led to several early color processes. Louis Lumière was the actual inventor of autochromes.

His process used a screen of tiny potato starch grains dyed orange-red, green and violet. Dusted onto a glass plate, the dyed grains were covered with a layer of sensitive panchromatic silver bromide emulsion. As light entered the camera, the dyed grains filtered it before it reached the emulsion. The exposure had to be very long. The result was a unique, realistic, positive color image on glass that required no further printing.

My personal reaction was how rustic it looked. I liked how you can see speckles of white spots on the picture but they are not big enough to take your eyes away from the photo. The way the picture was done made it have a black vignette around the edges.

Title: Ojo Caliente Church

Artist: Karl Keonig

Medium:Gravure

Year: 2010

Artist's Biography – (50-75 words):

Before pursuing a career in photography, Karl Koenig worked in academia at Stanford and the University of New Mexico.  To learn more he studied lithography, silkscreen, and non-silver photography for a few years.  In 1990, Karl Koenig created a process called polychromatic gumoil photography.  The process creates an old-looking photo.

Personal Reaction – (50 – 75 words):

I like the old looking pictures Koenig is able to create.  I do not like when he leaves bits of color.

FW: hand coloring

This is the hand coloring process using Marshall's Oil  Paints for photographs. This is the original process used to color photos in the 1800"s. This is a transparent oil paint or colored pencil. You can mix extenders w/ the paints.

I adore this process, I do practice this at home. I love the depth you can create w/ the paints or watercolors. This is my preferred way to process color photos.

Title: River Street, Towanda, PA

Artist: Nellie Vin

Medium: Gum Bichromate

Year: 2007

Process Description – (50-75 words):

The Gum Bichromate process consists of watercolor or printmaking paper that is soaked in gum dichromate for example. The paper is exposed to some sort of a pigment and brushed with gum. When finished brushing many layers of gum on the paper, then you soak the whole paper in water and let any excesses fall off the gum. Let it dry and then you have a finished image.

Personal Reaction – (50 – 75 words):

I think that the process is pretty neat, but a bit time consuming for me. The images seem more saturated and interesting because of it. The process seems to work the best for contemporary or nature shots, but not people necessarily.

John Joly and the Joly Color Process

Artist: John Joly

Personal Reaction – (50 – 75 words):

I believe Joly was a smart man. I think anyone is smart who invented something. I don't even understand what he invented. He made these before there were even computers. Impressive! Photography would not be the same today if it weren't for John Joly

Hello my name is Kathleen Martini, but everyone calls me K-Lee; in fact I did not realize my name was Kathleen until I was around three years old. I am currently a second year nursing student, so I will graduate as a RN in May. I have already started counting down the days until May 13th to be done with school. Once I graduate I will have to go back to school for one more year to get my BSN and then hopefully find a job. I feel that this start of the new school year came way too fast, and I wish my summer were not over!
