Artist: Anna Atkins (1799-1871)
Medium: Photography
Year: 1852
Artist's Biography – Anna Atkins's talents in photography originated because of her love as a botanist. She used cyanotype photograms to display the specimens she was working with. She is most know for her work in developing the book, "British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions," which contained many different images of the plants that she was studying. She found it easier to use photography to display her images than any other methods.
Personal Reaction – I personally love the work of Anna Atkins. All of the images are so simple, but yet so beautiful. Her work consists primarily of cyanotype photograms, but her intentions were not to make great works of art in photography; instead she used photography as a means of scientific research. I think that it is amazing that her work as a botanist lead to such great images, and especially for the time period in which it was created.
